Few features shape the first impression of a home like a staircase. A curved stair in particular draws the eye upward and gives even a modest entry hall a sense of occasion. Many older homes still have beautiful stairs hidden under layers of paint, worn carpet and creaking treads. With patience and the right sequence of work, they can become the centrepiece again.

Start with a careful survey

Before any sanding or painting, check the structure. Look for loose balusters, a handrail that flexes, squeaking treads and gaps where the stringer meets the wall. These are usually simple to fix, but they should be sorted before you spend time on finishes. A curved stair often has hand-shaped parts that are hard to replace, so repairing rather than removing is almost always the better choice.

Bring back the handrail

The handrail is the part everyone touches, and it deserves the most care. Strip old varnish gently, repair dents with matching timber, then build up a durable finish in thin coats. An oiled or satin finish feels warm under the hand and is easier to touch up than high gloss.

A staircase is furniture you walk on. Treat its wood, its lines and its light with the same care you would give a fine table.

Choose a runner that frames the curve

A stair runner softens footsteps, adds grip and brings colour into the hall. On a curved stair it needs to be fitted by an experienced installer who can follow each tread neatly.

  • Pick a flat weave or low pile wool that wears well and looks tailored
  • Leave a band of polished timber visible on each side of the runner
  • Use slim brass or bronze rods if you want a classic finishing touch
  • Choose a colour that links the hall to the rooms on either side

Light it like a gallery

Good lighting makes a staircase both safer and more beautiful. A pendant or lantern above the stairwell, soft wall lights along the curve and discreet step lights for the evening all help. Hang artwork or a mirror where the curve naturally leads the eye.
