A wall of built-in shelves around a fireplace is one of the most rewarding projects in any home. It brings order to books and treasured objects, adds architectural character and makes the hearth feel like the heart of the room. Planned well, it looks as if it has always been there.

Balance the wall

Symmetry is your friend. Centre the fireplace and give each side matching shelves and cupboards, even if the alcoves are slightly different in width. A continuous cornice across the top and a consistent base line tie the whole wall together into one calm composition.

Mix open shelves with closed storage

Closed cupboards at the bottom hide games, files and cables, while open shelves above display books and favourite pieces. Cupboard tops at around seat height also create a handy ledge for lamps, plants or a tray of drinks.

The best library walls are built for the books you own and the life you live, not for a photograph.

Plan the details that make it feel crafted

  • Use solid timber or high quality board with sturdy shelf edges that will not sag
  • Add a gentle moulding or a slim face frame for a traditional feel
  • Paint the joinery the same colour as the walls for a seamless look, or a deeper shade for drama
  • Fit adjustable shelves in at least one bay so taller books always have a home

Light the shelves softly

Picture lights above each bay or slim strips under the shelves bring the books to life in the evening. Wire them to a dimmer so the wall can glow quietly while the fire is lit.

Respect the fireplace

Keep the right clearances from the firebox and use non-combustible materials where needed. Our team checks these details as part of every fireplace project, so the finished wall is as safe as it is handsome.

If you are dreaming of a library wall of your own, our joinery and interior team would be glad to help you design and build it.
